Let’s talk gear…

Face it: gear is fun.

From obsessing over the latest catalog that arrived in the mail as a kid to playing ‘Bursts and other golden era vintage guitars I could only dream about when I was younger, gear is part of the fun.

The thrill of the hunt is never-ending. Here are a few notes on my current collection, which is always evolving.

Guitars

SOMETHING HIGH LEVEL ABOUT GUITARS. I’ve owned my share of vintage guitars. Here’s what I’ve been playing lately.

Gibson 1958 ES-335 Reissue. Blonde, huge neck, no binding. I’d been searching for one for years and was thrilled to grab a great one from one of my favorite shops in Brooklyn.

Fender Custom Shop Nocaster. The first Tele I truly fell in love with. Well under seven pounds, great acoustic resonance, and the Twisted Tele neck pickup gives me the glassy, Strat-like tone I occasionally need on a session. Another find from the old vault at Guitar Showcase.

PRS DGT. Phenomenal guitar, perhaps the best playing axe in the arsenal. This particular DGT is one big piece of Mahogany, no maple top, and this one used to belong to Henry Kaiser, which is neat. I’ve had the chance to sit down with Paul 1x1 a few times and I think he’s just great. Another great gem I stumbled on my favorite guitar shop in the world - Real Guitars in San Francisco.

PRS McCarty. Workhorse guitar I played a lot of organ trio and funk band gigs on back when I lived in Boston. I rescued this one from a Guitar Center in New Hampshire, if I remember correctly. Someday, I’ll put newer pickups in it (this McCarty is pre- 57/08 or 58/15) and bring it back in to the rotation.
